Worthy is The Lamb - October 2010

"Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing! (Revelation 5:12)

Many years ago when my grown son was about eight years old, he was determined to purchase a sleek, shiny red toy race car that he saw advertised on the back of a cereal box.  His mother and I tried to convince him that the toy wasn’t worth the money.  He was insistent that he wanted to purchase it with some birthday money.  So, he saved a few proof of purchase cards, I wrote out a check and he gave me his five dollars.  A few weeks later to toy arrived.  It broke within five minutes of playing with it.  It really was a cheap toy.

Experiencing the heavenly realm, the apostle John saw and heard heaven in its splendor, majesty, and glory.  From around the celestial throne, the angels exclaimed, "Worthy is the Lamb…”

Worthy means to have worth, to have value.  The Greek language says worthy means weightiness.  It’s like saying that something is worth its weight in gold.  It is not an alternative or a cheap substitute.

When Jesus approached the Jordon River, John the Baptist cried out, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

The eccentric prophet who wore clothes of animal skins and ate locus and honey called Jesus the, “Lamb of God.” John’s soul saw something that others couldn’t.  He knew the true Passover Lamb, and he understood the substitutionary work of the Messiah yet to unfold.  From the banks of the Jordon River, John looked to the future and saw the majestic heights of a place called Calvary.

John recognized that Jesus was worth trusting to take away our sins.  He had confidence that the stripes that the Savior would one day bare would be sufficient to heal us.  This made Jesus full of worth or worthy.

My son learned a valuable lesson from a toy from a cereal box promotion.  He learned there are things you can trust and some things you can’t.  There are things that have worth and things that don’t.  What is Jesus worth to you?
